St Olaf                                             March 30th

St Olaf, (Auley, Aulay) King and Martyr, d.1030, was the Son of King Harald of Norway.  Exiled from his country following his father’s death, he spent many years in guerrilla warfare until he fully embraced the Christian faith and consequently won back his Norway for himself and for Christ.  He was later deposed and martyred at the battle of Drontheim, where his body was interred and where now stands a magnificent cathedral in his honour.

His evangelising influence touched the isles of Orkney and spread from there to the Western Isles, especially the island of Lewis, at Gress.
