St Congan                             October 13th

St Congan (Comgan, Choan, Chowan) was an 8th century Abbot, born into a ruling family in Leinster.  When he inherited his father’s position, he tried to covert his subjects to Christianity, but had to flee the neighbouring rulers who objected to his missionary efforts.  He settled and lived as a simple monk in Lochalsh, setting up monasteries in the area.

Kilchoan (in Ardnamurchan, Seil and in Knoydart) are named after him as is the Cowan Fair at Turriff.  Long regarded as the patron of those parishes in West Lochaber known as the Rough Bounds.
